Destinations · Culture & Connection
Explore the world through Black history, diaspora connections, and the voices of people who call each place home. We make room for the truth, the joy, and the complexity of every culture.
Start with these cultural lessons. Learn the history, ask better questions, and approach food, art, language, traditions, and everyday life with respect. Each destination has many stories; no single guide can speak for everyone.
Ghana · Cape Coast & Elmina
Ghana’s coastal forts and castles connect the history of European commerce with the transatlantic trade in enslaved people and the African diaspora. Cape Coast and Elmina are places for careful learning and reflection.
A heritage visit should name enslavement honestly and make space for grief. Ghana’s communities also deserve attention as people living, creating, and shaping their future today.
Ask a local guide how the site’s history is interpreted today. Make time for conversations with contemporary artists, cooks, and business owners alongside the heritage visit.
How can a diaspora connection deepen your understanding while leaving room for the perspectives of people who live here?
Brazil · Salvador, Bahia
Salvador’s historic centre reflects encounters among African, Indigenous, and European cultures. Its colonial architecture also carries the history of the sugar industry and the trade in enslaved people.
Beautiful streets deserve more than a photo stop. Learn who built the city, whose work sustained it, and how communities describe their own heritage.
Ask a Bahian guide or educator how Afro-Brazilian identity is expressed today. Let local cooks, musicians, and artists explain their work in their own words.
What changes when you understand the history behind a place before choosing how to experience it?
South Africa · Robben Island
Robben Island’s prison buildings bear witness to political imprisonment during apartheid. UNESCO recognizes the island as a symbol of freedom and democracy overcoming oppression.
Learn how institutions enforced exclusion and how people resisted. Make room for the lives and experiences behind a landmark’s most familiar names.
Ask guides which stories visitors often overlook. Continue learning from contemporary South African writers, artists, and community educators beyond the memorial visit.
How does understanding resistance change the way you think about belonging and freedom today?
These introductory lessons are a starting point for learning, not a complete account of a country or its people. Historical context is linked to UNESCO; questions and respectful travel practices are BTC’s editorial guidance. Reviewed October 6, 2026.
Bring your questions and experiences to our community. Explore history, food, language, art, and everyday life with curiosity, honesty, and respect for each culture.
